- USA - Public Eye Promises Credit Card Fraud Protection
Public Eye, the organization behind The Alliance of Certified Safe Shopping Sites, today launched a new program designed to reduce the risks associated with online shopping. Public Eye announced that beginning today, online holiday shoppers making credit card purchases from Public Eye Platinum Certified Merchants will be insured against fraudulent use of their credit card.
- EU - Europe's regulators told to be more digital
The European Union must rethink the way it regulates its communications industries as digital technology revolutionises the way they operate in the Internet era, the European Commission said Wednesday. The EU executive committee unveiled a long-awaited discussion paper calling for a five-month debate on how to update Europe's laws to take account of the growing "convergence" between the telecommunications, broadcasting and computer sectors.

For Don Heath, the issue of who will administer domain names once the US government opens the system to competition next year just got more complex. As president of the Internet Society, Heath helped design the International Ad Hoc Committee's plan to take the Internet naming system global.
But now -- with the White House, industry leaders, and everyone else with an opinion already squabbling over who should control .com, .net, and other lucrative domains -- Congress is threatening to legislate. And congressional reactions to the IAHC plan "show a laughable misunderstanding of the Internet," says Heath.
